September 30 is Orange Shirt Day. Because this day falls on a Sunday, our school and the Simcoe County School Board will be participating in Orange Shirt Day on October 1. This day is about communities coming together in a spirit of reconciliation and hope because every child matters.
Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis Webstad's story of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the St. Joseph Mission residential school. It has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year
